Style
- Purdue’s Online Writing Lab Guide to APA Style (OWL):Detailed help on APA style, plagiarism issues, writing strategies, and much more.
- MIU Press Style Guide: (please check for updates). Covers all of the requirements for referring to publications by Maharishi and publications about the Transcendental Mediation Program.
Dissertation Style Aids
- APA Dissertation slideshow Our presentation on how to write a dissertation specific to MIU and APA 6th edition requirements. Once there is a more recent APA manual, this show will be replaced and should not be used.
- Endnote You get a discount as a student and can get it pretty reasonably; as of 2011 it is $120. It will automatically put the body of your text in APA Style (you will still have to create the preliminary pages that are unique to dissertations). Also check on Citation Makers; we recommend EasyBib; free and has good features, but don’t fully rely on it; citation makers won’t get your Movement citations right, for instance. Also check on Word 10 or more recent, it has a citation feature.
- Guidelines for Quoting and Referencing Maharishi (use these guidelines instead of standard APA Style; do not use automatic citation makers)
- Richo Akshare Line
- Definition of Prachetana Chart

- Texas Systems’ Crash Course on Copyright (Created by a copyright lawyer: copyright lawyers have to take a special bar exam to qualify)
Mechanics of Dissertation Proposal
Institution Review Board:
Before you conduct your research, fill out this IRB template and send it to the Institutional Review Board for Approval (ftravis@miu.edu). This ensures that you are respecting the rights of the subjects, and they are aware of the procedures of your study.
Timelines:
Five months before you would like to graduate, submit a finished draft of your dissertation to your chair. Work with them the next two months to bring it to a high level. This could take many iterations. Three months before you would like to graduate, send it to your committee. They have two weeks to reply. Incorporate their feedback. Send your final version to your committee and plan a defense time. Best to do this 1-2 months before you wish to graduate. You want to defend your dissertation at least four weeks before you wish to graduate.
After you defend your dissertation: Make final changes to your manuscript that emerged from your dissertation defense. Submit your document to the Dissertation Coordinator in the library no later than TWO WEEKS before graduation for inspection of the style and formatting. You also need to fill
out ProQuest forms and other forms. The final version with all formatting and style corrections should be in accordance with APA standards so that it can be accepted by the Dissertation Coordinator no later than ONE WEEK before graduation. If the dissertation is not ready in time, you will have to re-submit it and graduate at a later date.
